Three of the four candidates for Secretary of State spoke on why they should be elected to this position. The speakers were Democrats Kate Brown, Rick Metsger, and Vicki Walker. Play Audio June 5, 2006 - Ben Westlund, Independent Candidate for Governor Ben Westlund was formerly a successful small business owner, he now serves District 27, Deschutes County and Bend. An elected member previously of the Oregon House and now of the Oregon Senate, Senator Westlund recently dropped his party affiliation because he believes that party labels have caused partisan paralysis and are keeping us from solving Oregon’s problems. A former co-chair and current member of the Ways and Means committee, Senator Westlund has fought for stable revenue for schools, healthcare and public safety and is a champion for fiscal reform to stop Oregon’s over-reliance on the fluctuating income tax. He was an architect of the Oregon Cultural Trust and believes collaborative efforts between state government and our cultural organizations leads to economic development and social progress. Ben gave us a very entertaining talk about Oregon and his run for Governor.
